*Lord grant me the presence of mind of Serena Williams. Damn. Also, healthcare providers in general are dickish and dismissive to pregnant women in general, I don’t even want to think about racism on top of it.

*I love that “entitled students” is now a technical term, specifically defined and measured. Well, I mean it’s awful that the attitude is prevalent enough to be easy to study, but strangely refreshing compared to see it approached rigorously. This is my shocked face that they are extra entitled to women.

*I’m sorry, I couldn’t finish the garbage collection article. I’m the daughter of a Teamster and it made me too mad.

*So, what does work in worker retraining?

*Re: the dolphins. So long, and thanks for all the fish, indeed.

The garbage collection article was fascinating, especially the part about awesome teamwork.

In answer to your question, I was going to say that privatization is terrible, even though it’s touted as being cheaper. You can’t be cheaper than the government, while also grabbing a profit, without cutting corners that the government is unwilling to cut. And they are certainly cutting corners all over the place. So I was quite surprised to read “Garbage haulers colluded, submitting uniformly high price estimates to a customer.” And even more surprised by the next plot twist–yikes!–but I won’t give that away here.

And I’d never heard of “independent unions,” what a scam.

I beg to differ re the Serena Williams story. We follow an algorithm based on pre test probability when diagnosing dvt/pe because ct scans with contrast are not without risk, and also are not 100% sensitive for PE. One could argue based on her history that the pre test probability for pe was so high they should have empirically anticoagulated her and spared her the risk of the ct scan, but given that she had just had surgery they were probably concerned about bleeding. Lower extremity Doppler’s are a reasonable first step because they are low risk and quick and easy to do. It sounds like she received prompt medical attention and got the care she needed when she needed it.
