We just got this mailer from my institution stating that now we’ve got all kinds of additional options for our retirement investment funds, like lifecycle dealios and all kinds of equity and bond funds. Should I worry about any of that or just stick with the default, which is where I’m at now? (Sorry to derail, but you’re the only people I know who know jacke dicke about this shittio.)
February 21, 2015 at 4:25 pm
Depends on what company you’re using and what you’re currently invested in. Lifecycle funds are good if you want to just pick one date and not worry about rebalancing or figuring out when to change your stock/bond ratios. But they can be expensive depending on the company.

I just found out all of my retirement funds are a 403(b) in TIAA-CREF Lifecycle 2030 Fund – Institutional Class. Does that sound okay?
February 22, 2015 at 6:06 pm
That sounds great. You don’t have to think about them again until like 2030 now.

It sounds ok to #2 — I have a lot of my funds in a similar dealio from the same company — but I also have a small pot of money in a more hand-balanced thing. I’m not sure what #1 would say about it all being in one place, but it’s a diversified place, so… #1?

Why do people accept adjunct positions that pay so poorly? In some cases, they get paid better teaching high school students. I don’t understand?
February 23, 2015 at 3:02 pm
We don’t either, but that post seems to give a lot of insight into why.

It just made me question it harder. Why sustain the abuse? Is the possibility of tenure REALLY that big of a deal? Is it really so much better than a normal job? And side question because I don’t really know the answer to this– are there some areas where research can be properly conducted as a side job? Like if you’re a high school social studies teacher can you do research on a humanities related field on the side? Or is that you won’t get published because you lack University affiliation? I work in the academic world but I don’t understand it since I’m not an academic myself.
February 23, 2015 at 5:02 pm
No, no it isn’t. But abused women often don’t leave marriages either.
People do get published without academic affiliation.

It makes me really sad.
