Gun-Humping Theater

My MIL (who works in a public elementary school) called to tell us about the training they’re receiving in her school district about what to do when there’s an armed gunman inside the school.

What she told me is deeply, deeply disturbing and destabilizing.  Just look at what this link is called:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/armed-school-safety-guardian-training-polk-county-florida/

(this link isn’t about the place she lives or her school system, but it’s very similar to their program, and it was the best example I could find.)

IT’S A GOOD THING THEY GET SO MUCH TRAINING BEFORE RUNNING AROUND ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WITH GUNS.
Imagine being a kid in a Florida school and knowing there is a white man (at least in her school it’s a white dude) in your school whose actual job is to shoot people. MIL got trained on where to stash her kids in her classroom so that the fewest of them would die, and what color piece of paper she should slide under the classroom door to let someone know that her kids were dying. She’s having a really hard time with this, AS SHE SHOULD.

Also she works in special ed and her kids are totally incapable of following the drill procedures (which can’t be done from a wheelchair). It is the WORST. It is TERRIFYING. It is crazy-making.

Seeing the inside of the training the adults get is INSANE. There is no way for people to do these procedures:
in case of active shooter, don’t call 911. Put this guy’s cell number in your phone and call him.
….yeah.

She has different places to put her (multiply-disabled) kids depending on what kind of gun the shooter has. WHAT KIND OF GUN!

She works with disabled elementary school students. And the message she got was to be fkcng terrified the whole time she’s at work, and also she needs to identify what kind of gun is shooting at her kids as she piles furniture in front of her door.
*rage*
Also she feels crazy… Because it is DESIGNED to make her feel crazy.

Her co-workers are like “It’s great, we’ll be so safe, this one guy will take care of us.”
(…unless he’s in the bathroom or something.)
The world is scary but we’ll be safe because we have GOOD GUYS WITH GUNS

GUYS WHOSE JOB IS TO SHOOT PEOPLE INSIDE AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
There’s no way That’ll go wrong.
There’s no way their EXTENSIVE training (see link above) would let them make a mistake and open fire on, say, a Sikh parent in a turban picking up his kid at a crowded school.
Yeah it’ll be fine
arrrrrrrrgh
She’s so upset and she can’t tell if she’s crazy or not.
I told her, NOT.

She said she’s the only one upset by it. It’s really really bad. Everyone else on the staff thinks the school’s designated shooter guy is just the greatest position to have.

She’s angry that the government is taking money from public schools to fund these positions (which don’t even get paid that much, considering their job is to shoot guns in an elementary school).

This attack of rage has been brought to you by our trashfire of a country, by the letter T, and by a high level of humidity. Down with humidity, down with pants. Smash the patriarchy. Can’t happen soon enough.

Grumpeteers, who’s got some rageterror to share?

That’s awful. Kids, especially POC and those with behavioral issues, are going to get killed by these vigilantes.

Remember when Cheney shot that guy in the face, and the guy ended up apologizing to HIM? That’s when I knew we were all in really deep trouble.

We are living in a Looney Toons cartoon, and all I know is that I am not the Roadrunner.

Thank you for telling the truth. When negligence causes a discharge who is responsible? (in this calendar year I recall instantly 2 such discharges from negligence at schools. There are NO ACCIDENTS with guns only criminal negligence, our laws and enforcement ought to reflect this.

Terrifying. We had active intruder training today, and I told my coworker about this. She straight up said “I’d quit.” She was teaching at a high school that had a shooter. Her class was safe, but it took police four hours to clear the campus and reach her room; this was four hours in which no one had any idea what was happening, because this was before cell phones were ubiquitous in schools.

Our training has a different approach. Ours teaches run > hide > fight. So, if you can get out, do so. I have big windows, so students can drop to the ground and just run. Then, hide if you have no good way to get out. Fight if you must (or want to). It’s more chaotic, but the idea is to present options and empower people.

And, of course, I remind myself that school shootings are rare. But maybe they will become less so as we introduce guns into schools, sadly. This is another good reason to avoid the south. I am worried, however, that my state seems to be leaning red (hoping not) and things like this might be imminent.

Our state (Arkansas) has overridden the universities’ decision and forced us to allow concealed carry on campus.

Campus security is no more happy about this than we are.

I have been elected to our local School Committee, and we held a public forum about school safety after Parkland. I was filled with SO much rage during that event – it was really hard for me to keep a poker face in response to some of the stupidity. So many people making horrible suggestions to make our kids and teachers scared and not any safer. But I did semi-lose it when an audience member stood up to say we should be arming teachers. Several audience members came up to thank me for it later, but I am so angry that people can’t see what the real problem is here – guns and our gun culture.

There are many things that are far from perfect about where I live… but at least we do not have this nonsense. I am so sorry for your MIL and the kids she works with.

Fuuuuuu….. Not crazy! Shelter in place drills for my infant at daycare brought me to tears. Was in DD’s school for a shelter in place drill with 5 year olds. Could hardly hold it together. Teachers should NOT have to deal with this. Kids should NOT have to deal with this. Parents should NOT have to deal with this.

This is so distressing. Thank you for sharing this.

Horrific. This kind of thing is high on the lists of “reasons I’d like to move to another country.”

This is utterly and horrifically crazy-making.

Our work policy is the Run, Hide, Fight video. It’s on the FBI.gov website.

WE haven’t gone back to school yet up here yet so no drills as of yet. I live in one of the most liberal parts of a liberal state so 90% of people are parked right where you are. Thankfully, in my small town, law enforcement is 1/2 mile away from the grammar school and only about 2 miles from the middle/high so hopefully they can arrive quickly if the worst is to happen.

Today is a good day to make this call: https://5calls.org/issue/suspend-kavanaugh-hearings

Also, we should have put in a link for calls about the gun problem… 5calls has several options: https://5calls.org/more I would urge you to call your state first, and then pick one of the federal ones.

I am sitting in annual diversity training right now and they are telling me that I need *%%*?ing training for dialoguing with diverse students after a mass shooting. No, no I shouldn’t because there shouldn’t be #*^ing mass shootings.
