RBOChores and money

  • Reminder:  if you haven’t in a while, now is a good time to clean out your dryer vents.  We just did and all of a sudden it’s only taking one cycle for things to get dry again.
  • Second year of a big tax refund from me only getting half pay for half the year. It will be better to be making more money, but it is also nice not writing out a check to the IRS.
  • Refund went straight to 529 plans.
  • Do not put frozen pizza on a heated pizza stone.  (We recently bought a new pizza stone after shattering the old one.)
  • DH recently bought a brush cleaning attachment for his drill.  It is AMAZING.
  • DC1 has spent $0 on non-necessities.  No eating out.  No concerts.  No travel. No clothing (though we would pay for clothing).  No tchotchkies. The only things on the credit card bill so far are textbooks!  I spent about $1K a year on the above when I was in college, not adjusted for inflation (to be fair, plane tickets to see DH cost about the same then as they do now!).
  • Update:  Hir friend took hir to a thrift store and zie bought a scarf and a jacket ($8).  Very exciting!  DC1 says zie needs to practice buying things and also it’s scary to use a credit card and zie doesn’t know how to buy stuff.  (When I was that age I was doing the family grocery shopping when I was home from school.)
  • My friend with a kid at an Ivy spends a lot, though he’s also been making a ton of money.  And he’s got a really nice job lined up this coming summer as a rising junior.  (He applied to 250 places, got one interview and one offer.)
  • We ran out of check registers for the first time ever.  I had to buy some(!). We write so few checks but I still have to record checking transactions.
  • We don’t write zero checks because the music teachers both take check.  Occasionally we’ll have to write one for another reason though those are getting fewer and fewer.
  • I would really like to move someplace nice for part of the summer but we’d need to be able to take the cats (or leave them with my sister but that’s a big ask and I’m not sure nice kitty could handle it since boy kitty is a bully).  And it would need to be somewhere cheap.  I’m guessing we could find a place that’s cheap in a college town up north, but the cats are kind of a non starter. It also sounds like effort.
  • Maybe the weather won’t be as bad this summer.  SIGH.
  • a lot still depends on what DC1 ends up doing.
  • Prices for Spain over Christmas went way up once we got the kids’ winter schedules.  Then they went up even more.  So I suspect we will spend next Christmas in the midwest again.  It’s probably for the best.

    I wouldn’t even know where to find my checkbook… 😹 😹 😹

Argh. Adding the cleaning out of dryer vent to my To Do list. I have to figure out HOW to do that first.

We paid the state some and will get a not-insignificant refund which I wasn’t totally expecting. I estimated it as best I could but don’t really spend that much time worrying about getting it very close to zero. I did hate that, because of one of our investment firms taking forever, we had to file at the last minute. That’s nervewracking.

Drat to the Spain prices going up for the winter.

What if you got a house/cat sitter and the kitties stayed home? There’s bound to be a college kid who might be looking for a place to stay over the summer. Maybe even a queer kid who doesn’t feel safe going home.

I think we’d miss them and I’d worry about Nice Kitty who has never lived with anyone else for a substantive amount of time. It’s different if Sister Kitty stayed with my sister because she was my sister’s cat for quite a while.

off topic – but I’m currently enjoying some romances with diverse characters by Lily Chu. Set in Toronto. I’m listening to the audiobooks read by Phillipa Soo and it is significantly enhancing the experience. Current read is “The Comeback” – tightly wound lawyer and K-Pop idol fall for each other… it’s very sweet.

I’m so impressed by DC1’s (lack of) spending! And then I reflected that my own DC1 did not spend much either, probably because between the meal plan and care packages, they were well provided for.

In fact, we thought it might be time to replace the laptop they’ve had since high school, but Apple had some recall apparently, so the screen and battery just got replaced for free!!

    • nicoleandmaggie Says:

I think there may also be some social anxiety surrounding actually doing the purchasing. Zie hasn’t had a lot of practice.

Nice on the laptop recall! DC1 just burned through another charger cable (got a new one in January!) so we may need to get a new laptop in case it’s not the cable but the laptop itself. DC1 had us order the replacement because hir laptop was dead but I really think zie should get the broken one reimbursed or replaced.

I always get new check registers at my bank. They were out of ones with 2024 calendar on them when I went. But the teller said the manager had ordered more. Luckily my daughter had two and gave me one so I didn’t have to wonder when to go back.

I always start a new register every year so I can keep it with the bank statements and the tax returns. Just in case of being audited. We were audited twice when we had a business, and it is very stressful. Once all they did was match the check register with the transactions on the bank statements. And checked the addition on the register.

    • nicoleandmaggie Says:

We just don’t go to the bank anymore for any reason. A 20 pack of registers is $5.99 from Amazon, so it’s not worth making a special trip for us. Our last register apparently lasted 4 years (2020-2024).

      Being audited sounds very stressful!

My kid also spends almost nothing but when we talked about it, he said that he rarely has time to go off campus. Catching up on sleep on the weekends costs nothing. I think a spending problem is harder to fix. Plus, these fancy privates cost a lot for a reason. They have a lot of free or near free events to do too. My kid’s had a whole total eclipse day planned, cancelled classes, they have skate days on the D1 hockey rink and stuff like that.
